With the teaser video starting off with Lauryn Hill swooning us with her version of Nina Simone's classic, "Feeling Good", I knew Amerigo Gazaway's upcoming project was to be a special one. Time and time again, Gazaway has proven he is the master of his craft, mashing up some of the most influential artist of our time. I first got my dose of the Gazaway affect back in 2011 when he released, "Fela Soul". Mixing the perfect dose of Fela Kuti and De La Soul, I knew I had stumbled upon a gold mine! Fast forward to the present day and we now have one of the best mashup releases of the year. As Amerigo put it, " With Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill seated together at the table, collaboration transforms into vivid conversation, call and response, and a call to action--private, personal, and public--across space, time, and realm. "
My first spin didn't disappoint, and with Nina asking us at the beginning of Ready or Not, "Are you ready, black people?" I was overwhelmed with sadness. Why wasn't this project released earlier? I had absolutely no idea I needed this collaboration in my life until today. Phenomenal. Sensational. Electrifying. There's just not enough words out there to describe the feeling Nina & Lauryn give you as they croon every hook with ease.
Amerigo blessed us with The Sweetest Thing we've ever truly known and for that, I thank him. No one can do what he's able to to. He has a style, and so, I ask that you come to support him and listen for a while.
